The exhibition

Musical works are, by their very nature, subject to interpretation and reinterpretation. This is less often the case in the visual arts, where the value and preservation of the unique and original work are central to institutional concerns. Straddling these two worlds, certain works from the Frac Île-de-France collection highlight this openness of art, which the collaboration with student musicians brings to life—and to music.

Gestures, breath, life, and history find their way into works that intertwine musical forms and content, giving them their full originality. Interpreting a work also means making it one’s own, just as we grow attached to music that accompanies us daily and forms its soundtrack. Music also arises from the group and strengthens the bonds of the collective that works—sometimes historically recorded on tape—capture.

Within the spaces of the Nina Simone Conservatory in Romainville, the works extend the many classes and concerts held in the halls. At the conclusion of the exhibition and the accompanying sessions, they become the medium for varied interpretations to celebrate the inextricable link between art and life that contemporary art continues to champion.

In a back-and-forth between institutions, on May 23 the Frac will host a public concert at Les Réserves, presenting the results of the educational residency by the duo XAMP (eXtended Accordion and Music Project) conducted this year at the conservatory.

An exhibition as part of the program Le Syndrome de Bonnard, ou l’impermanence des œuvres.
