Whether psychological, allegorical or intimate, the genre of portrait courses through art history. It represents, immortalizes or celebrates one or several persons. Realistic, idealized or fictitious, the portrait gives us political, social or personal information.
Through a selection of artworks from the Fonds régional d’art contemporain d’Île-de-France, the Face à Face exhibition offers a contemporary approach to the portrait. This theme evokes mainly a person’s physical representation, but describing an individual can also engage with questions of representation, intimacy and commitment. Through photographs, paintings, collages and videos, the exhibited artists create the portraits of individuals, landscapes or places.
