Datumo ! – Julien Prévieux

Opening on Wednesday 2 december 2015*, from 7 to 9pm.

Through his research into statactivism, the artist questions the predominant role of quantified data in daily life, with the aim of undermining their original function and finding new usages for them.

Datumo !, is a project by the artist Julien Prévieux which took place in Paris in 2013 with a working group as part of the programme of public event of the frac île-de-france. Indeed, every two years, the education department of the frac île-de-france hosts an artist’s project articulated around a workshop.

Since 2006, Pierre Ardouvin, Michel Blazy, Valérie Jouve, Tania Bruguera, Simona Denicolai & Ivo Provoost have been invited.

Julien Prévieux conducted a quantification experiment related to the visual perception of the artworks exhibited within Paint it black , a group show held at le plateau (14.03 – 12.05.13) with pieces from the frac île-de-france collection.

After the end of the exhibition, the drawings – which reproduced the gazes of the participants watching the artworks – were executed in wool thread and exhibited in the galleries in lieu of the works they documented.

On the occasion of the release of Datumo !,  the publication that documents the project, Julien Prévieux takes over the frac’s window display with some new diagrams. They reproduce the gazes’ movements of the participants Jacques Carrier and Maryvonne Carrier watching Quality Street. This installation by Nicolas Chardon was previously exhibited in the window display.

Thus, the drawings made of wool thread substitute themselves to the watched artwork and shape the traces of « phantom gazes ».

*The event “L’antenne culturelle’s tenth anniversary” which was planed for the 2nd of december, is postponed to spring 2015.
