This paper is rooted in a multi-faceted research project that took over 12 years to complete: data collection, exhibition, and mediation activities inside and outside the Fier monde ecomuseum. The project focused on the history of a number of militant Quebec associations working with marginalised communities, and on the artistic practices deployed within them. Since it was intended to co-construct the memory of this history within different frameworks and to encourage its appropriation by different audiences (activists, researchers, museologists, etc.), it gradually took on the character of a mediation activity involving participatory action research, cultural mediation and artistic co-creation. Analysing it will enable us to reflect on the frameworks and issues at stake in this encounter. How can we work together? How can we invent and experiment with work formats and ethics that suit diverse people and environments with different logics? How can we try to unravel the relationships of expertise and power that are at play?
